CMAR’s Clinical Director Featured in Psycom
Denver, CO: Colorado Medication Assisted Recovery’s clinical director Michael Damioli has been featured in a recent article from Psycom.
In their article “How Horror Movies Exploit Mental Health and Why It Matters,” Damioli offers his perspective on the film and media industry’s role in stereotyping mental illness, particularly in Horror films. Damioli discusses the misconceptions horror films often fuel in regard to various mental illnesses such as multiple personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder.
In Damioli’s view, “[Films] help define our view of the world. And for a lot of people, their only experience with mental illness is through these movies,”. Moreso, Damioli explains how “people are more scared of things they don’t understand”, and “because [many people] don’t understand mental illness, it can be scary – that’s why it’s easy to make movies about it.”
Damioli references movies such as Unsane and the impact films have in instilling a sense of fear surrounding psychiatric care, which can discourage those in need of treatment to seek help. Reflecting upon his experiences interacting with patients in need of psychiatric treatment, Damioli notes “I’ve seen it in my practice many times: If someone needs inpatient psychiatric treatment, they’re terrified to get it.” At Colorado Medication Assisted Recovery, outpatient mental health treatment programs are available to patients struggling with substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health condition.
Damioli also provides commentary on films that have successfully portrayed the realities of those living with a mental illness, such as Black Swan.
