Peer Support and Its Importance
In CMAR we believe that when you seek addiction treatment, getting support from the people around you is essential.
We provide that support through our peer support and recovery groups. These groups are viral because they are constant as you move from one area of life to the next.
When you create personal relationships with other people in recovery, there are a range of benefits, including:
- Learning from other peoples’ experiences
- Talking out issues, such as facing triggers
- Allowing other people to learn from you
- No judgment from the people around you
- Continuous accountability and support
Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma is a broad term that can address a wide range of circumstances: it generally refers to a deeply disturbing or distressing emotional experience.
CMAR trauma therapy is designed to address the psychological, emotional, and physical issues that may be linked to your experiences. Our team is trained to recognize signs of traumatic stress and provide necessary treatments. We can help you develop coping strategies to aid your long-term recovery.
Trauma-informed care is a way of recognizing this reality and providing real help for those who have experienced trauma. It reduces fear and promotes healing through respect, understanding, safety, trustworthiness, collaboration, and self-empowerment.
Trauma-informed care is a way of recognizing this reality and providing real help for those who have experienced trauma. It reduces fear and promotes healing through respect, understanding, safety, trustworthiness, collaboration, and self-empowerment.
"Without the proper help and support, trauma can make it difficult to move forward in life".
Family Therapy
At CMAR, we believe that a program that includes family therapy is an effective way of rebuilding relationships that addiction, stress, and conflict have weakened.
There are many advantages to attending a family therapy program. For instance, you learn new ways to communicate with your loved ones.
We’ll help you talk to your family members about the causes behind your addiction.
Due to a family therapy program, you can understand healthy boundaries and dynamics. In some instances, your addiction may have led to a codependent relationship with your loved ones. Signs of a codependent relationship include:
- Low self-esteem
- The need to please others
- Poor boundaries relating to the person’s body, money, or belongings
- Reacting to the thoughts and feelings of other people
- Lack of self-care
- Acting controlling or needing to control some aspect of life
- Struggling with dysfunctional communication
- Obsessing over the relationship, fears, and anxieties
- Needing someone to like you
With a family therapy program, we can identify codependent relationships in your life. Then, we can help you create coping mechanisms to help you or your loved ones escape these unhealthy relationships. As a result, the relationships in your life can be healthier and more robust.
Who Are the Best Candidates for Antabuse?
It’s important to remember that Antabuse is best suited for individuals who meet specific eligibility criteria.
To ensure the best outcomes, patients should be:
Diagnosed with alcohol use disorders. Also, be alcohol-free for at least 7-10 days before starting Antabuse to avoid precipitating withdrawal symptoms.
Have attempted other forms of treatment and found them ineffective.
Are healthy enough to take the prescribed medications and can commit to regular check-ups.
A comprehensive medical assessment is carried out to evaluate suitability, taking into account factors such as the patient’s overall health, history of substance use, and any co-occurring mental health conditions.
The most suitable candidates are those dedicated to a comprehensive recovery program, including therapy and support groups, as these complement the medication’s effectiveness. Our team is committed to working closely with each patient to create a personalized treatment plan that meets their unique needs.
Antabuse Evidence of Effectiveness
Effectiveness in Maintaining Abstinence
Recent studies have shown that Antabuse is effective in helping individuals maintain abstinence from alcohol when taken consistently. A meta-analysis indicated that supervised administration of Antabuse leads to better treatment outcomes compared to non-supervised use, highlighting the importance of adherence and consistent monitoring in its effectiveness.
Long-Term Use
The longer a person stays on Antabuse, the more effective it is in supporting abstinence. This is likely due to the reinforcement of the habit of not drinking. However, the decision to continue long-term use should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider, considering the patient's overall treatment plan and progress.
HOW Antabuse WORKS
Antabuse works by blocking the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, which is responsible for metabolizing alcohol in the liver.
When alcohol is consumed, it is converted into acetaldehyde, a toxic substance. Usually, acetaldehyde is quickly broken down into non-toxic substances. However, Antabuse prevents this breakdown, causing a buildup of acetaldehyde in the body.
This leads to unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, and flushing. These negative reactions serve as a deterrent, discouraging individuals from drinking alcohol and supporting their efforts to remain sober.
- Mechanism of Action: Antabuse contains disulfiram, which inhibits the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, causing a buildup of acetaldehyde when alcohol is consumed, leading to unpleasant symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and headache.
- Administration Frequency: Antabuse is typically taken daily or as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
- Eligibility: Patients must undergo a thorough medical evaluation to determine their suitability for Antabuse treatment.
- Support: Comprehensive support services, including regular check-ins and personalized care plans, are provided to ensure the best possible outcomes and support long-term sobriety.
Benefits of Antabuse Treatment
Prevention of Relapse
- By causing unpleasant effects when alcohol is consumed, Antabuse significantly reduces the likelihood of relapse, helping individuals maintain their sobriety.
Deterrent Effect
- The adverse reactions to alcohol provide a strong deterrent against drinking, supporting patients' commitment to abstinence.
Supportive of Long-term Recovery
- When combined with comprehensive therapy and support programs, Antabuse promotes sustained recovery and overall well-being. This holistic approach enhances the effectiveness of the treatment and helps individuals achieve lasting sobriety.
What Is Alcohol Use Disorder?
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a common condition that affects an estimated 15 million people in the United States. It’s defined as the physical inability to stop drinking alcohol despite adverse consequences. It can be caused by a wide variety of environmental and biological factors and often accompanies a mental health condition, such as anxiety or depression.
AUD is considered a chronic relapsing brain disorder and can vary from mild to severe. Suffering from AUD can cause health problems, which can worsen over time. It can also have adverse effects on the sufferer’s friends, family, and occupation.
Medications Used in MAT
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) utilizes several FDA-approved medications that are specifically designed to help manage withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and support long-term recovery from substance use disorders. The most commonly used medications in MAT include:
Vivitrol (Naltrexone)
Trauma-informed care is a way of recognizing this reality and providing real help for those who have experienced trauma. It reduces fear and promotes healing through respect, understanding, safety, trustworthiness, collaboration, and self-empowerment.
Suboxone (Buprenorphine)
Suboxone helps manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings by binding to the same receptors in the brain as other opioids but without producing the same euphoric effects.
Subutex
Subutex is buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist that helps manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings.
Who Are the Best Candidates for MAT?
Medication-assisted treatment can be beneficial for any individual struggling with a substance use disorder, particularly those with an addiction to opioids and alcohol. However, it’s important to note that MAT isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.
Those who have a diagnosed addiction and are willing to comply with all components of a comprehensive treatment plan, including medication management, counseling, and behavioral therapies.
Have attempted other forms of treatment and found them ineffective.
Are healthy enough to take the prescribed medications and can commit to regular check-ups.
These individuals are often able to reap the most benefits from MAT. However, the ultimate decision should be made in collaboration with healthcare providers who can assess the patient’s overall health, addiction history, and readiness to change.
At Colorado Medication Assisted Recovery, we understand the unique challenges of recovery and work closely with our patients to determine the best treatment plan for their needs.

Seeking help for a loved one?
There’s hope for a better, drug and alcohol-free life. If you or a loved one is seeking help for an opioid, benzo, or alcohol addiction, CMAR can provide the support and resources needed to get you on the path to recovery.
Why Choose Colorado Medication Assisted Recovery
At CMAR, we understand that recovery demands much more than a prescription. Recovery is a challenging personal journey of incremental change, and that’s why medication is just a part of our approach.
One of the most valuable parts of our opioid addiction treatment program and alcohol addiction treatment program is the co-occurring addiction and mental health therapies we offer. We understand that many individuals suffering from substance use disorder may also suffer from other mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. We guide patients in processing experiences that continue to impact them negatively. We look at the family system, social supports, and prior history of trauma or abuse.
Finally, we help our patients find the causes of anger, fear, sadness, loneliness, and other trigger emotions and provide tools so they don’t cause relapse.
